Nestled in the hills of eastern Anaheim south of Yorba Linda is the planned community of Anaheim Hills. Under ownership of the Yorba family through the 1800s and the Nohl family from the 1940s, the land was used for cattle grazing and growing avocados and oranges. Texaco acquired the land in 1970 with plans to build a high-density suburb, but when plans fell through, they built a rural community that retained the rugged charm of the surrounding area instead.Development has been refreshingly slow compared to the rest of Anaheim, and with a current population of only fifty-five thousand, this beautiful community has large areas of unspoiled scenery and few plans for major expansion in the future. With the Mediterranean climate, average summer highs are in the mid-eighties and winter lows in the mid-forties. This area receives less than a foot of rain every year, concentrated mostly in the cool rainy season, and hiking trails throughout the hills and a golf course provide plenty of opportunities to enjoy the mild climate year-round.
The city is served by the Orange Unified School District, which has had three high schools listed in Newsweek's 1000 Best High Schools; in fact, every Anaheim Hills area school has been named a California Distinguished School. The larger community of Anaheim is home to the world-famous Disneyland Resort (also the largest employer by far), the Anaheim Ducks (2007 Stanley Cup champs), and the L.A. Angels (winner of the 2002 World Series). Besides Disneyland, top area employers include the Kaiser Foundation Hospital and the Anaheim Regional Medical Center. Anaheim is also home to the family-owned Southern California supermarket chain Northgate González Markets.
