On the lists of Money Magazine's best places to live, the FBI's safest places to live, and the highest-income cities in the U.S., the Los Angeles suburb of Chino Hills is famous for its scenery and winding hills, its excellent public schools, and its warm community.From its modest beginnings in the 1770s as cattle grazing land, the Chino Hills area has been a tuberculosis rehabilitation destination, a favorite hide-out for Prohibition-era tourist and bootleggers, and an isolated counterculture artists' enclave over the years. Incorporated in 1991, the city's current population of 75,000 inhabits a carefully designed community that includes residential areas and shopping centers within walking distance of each other, thus avoiding the overdeveloped, vehicle-focused environment which plagues other towns in the area.
There are also several master-planned developments, including the Vellano Country Club golf and housing community, one of the most upscale developments in the area. Chino Hills is an average of about 30 miles away from each of the large surrounding cities, including Anaheim, Los Angeles, and Santa Ana, and most of its residents commute. The top employers in the city are the Chino Valley Unified School District, which includes nine California Distinguished Schools and a National Blue Ribbon school within Chino Hills; the City of Chino Hills, which hosts several large, local events throughout the year; and community retailers Costco, Lowes, and Albertson's.
Visitors can take advantage of the cool Mediterranean climate, warm winters and comfortable summers, with outdoor attractions like golf clubs and parks, upscale shopping at The Shoppes at Chino Hills, and the Yorba and Slaughter Families Adobe, an historic adobe home with original furniture from the 1850s that's on the National Register of Historic Places.
