Once a tiny farming town and a Los Angeles suburb, Costa Mesa has grown into its own with a population of over 100,000 and a booming economy. As part of the historic Rancho San Antonio created by the Yorba family beginning in 1801, the area around the Santa Ana and Newport Railroads, known as the town of Harper, began developing after the Mexican-American War. Harper became Costa Mesa in 1920, and with its strong agriculture-based economy and nearby Army base; it flourished through World War II.South Coast Plaza, which was built in the 1960s in a former lima bean field, is the largest shopping center in California with over 250 stores and is one of the city's economic pillars. Besides South Coast Plaza, which generates nearly $1.5 billion in sales each year, there are dozens of other entertainment options in this bustling city. Costa Mesa is home to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, which hosts major tours and entertainers year-round, and the South Coast Repertory Theater, home to award-winning local productions. The Orange County Fairgrounds draws over a million visitors each year to the three-week-long Orange County Fair.
Costa Mesa also has dozens of parks and a golf course. The largest employer is Experian, and three Orange Coast College and Coast Community College organizations round out the top four. The city enjoys a cool Mediterranean climate with an average high of 90 in August and an average low of 38 in December. Its 26 public high schools are part of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, and there are four colleges and universities as well.
