A booming commuter town of about a hundred thousand, Murrieta got its start when Spanish rancher Esequial Murrieta gave the 54,000 combined acres of Rancho Pauba and Rancho Temecula to his brother Juan to raise 100,000 sheep in 1873. With the completion of the railroad, the natural beauty and the hot springs of the area began to draw visitors and contributed to the region's initial development.A housing boom in the 1980s brought commuters from the surrounding metropolitan areas, and the town was finally incorporated in 1991. Since then it has quadrupled in size; it is served by seventeen public schools with more to open in the near future. Despite the rapid growth, though, Murrieta is still the second safest city of its size within the United States.
Winters are cool and wet, summers warm and dry, with spring showers and lots of sunshine. The Murrieta Valley Unified School District and Southwest Healthcare System are the two largest employers by far, with the City of Murrieta, the County of Riverside, and a handful of major retailers rounding out the top ten.
Three golf courses, including the Bear Creek course designed by Jack Nicklaus, and a family fun center offer year-round entertainment within the city, and the Santa Rosa Plateau ecological reserve and Lake Skinner just outside the city provide even more options for enjoying the sunny weather. The Golden Triangle shopping and conference area and the Town Square are only two of the projects currently under development to meet the demands of the growing population.
