Orange (“A Slice of Old Town Charm”) is a moderately sized city a few miles north of Santa Ana. Like most of the surrounding communities, it was part of the original land grant from the Spanish government to the Yorba family in 1801. The land around Santiago Creek was acquired by two Los Angeles attorneys after the Mexican-American War, and the agricultural community there grew until it was large enough to become incorporated in 1888.The city kept expanding on the strength of its citrus business and experienced another growth spurt in the 1950s after the highways of Los Angeles were extended throughout Southern California. Unlike other cities in the area, however, Orange’s pre-1950s architecture wasn’t destroyed to make way for new developments, so the old city center retains a unique historical feel absent in many other Southern California communities.
Downtown Orange Plaza offers a variety of shopping choices from upscale to antique, and several films have shot scenes here. The public schools are run by the Orange Unified School District, and there are two colleges and universities in town. On the whole, the city of Orange is blessed with a mild Mediterranean climate; its cool, rainy winters reach an average nighttime low in the mid-forties, and the warm, dry summer highs hover in the mid-eighties. Since the western part of the city is only a few miles from the ocean and the eastern part is tucked into the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains, though, each side of the city can experience quite different climates.
Orange’s historic district is one of the largest in California and contains excellent examples of several styles of late 19th- and early 20th-century architecture. Other places to visit in Orange include the Orange County Zoo and a wildlife sanctuary. The economy depends largely on the medical industry; the top three employers are UC Irvine Medical Center, St. Joseph Hospital, and Children’s Hospital of Orange County.
