Home to the first orange trees in California, the city of Riverside began when Tennessee abolitionist John W. North founded a town beside the Santa Ana River. A few years later, rancher Eliza Tibbets planted the first three navel orange trees. The trees flourished in California where they had failed in Florida, and the California citrus industry was born. Within ten years, there were a quarter million citrus trees in Riverside, and the citrus industry led to railroads, irrigation, hotels, and wealthy vacationers.Over 300,000 modern-day residents are drawn to the semi-arid Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and warm winters, and the extensive public parks that wind through the hills for miles, including the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park and the University of California, Riverside, Botanical Gardens. Other attractions include the Mission Inn and Museum, the largest Mission Revival Style building in the U.S., and the U.C. Riverside California Museum of Photography, which contains one of the largest photography collections in the U.S. The city of Riverside hosts several large festivals each year, like the Riverside Festival of Lights that begins in October and continues through New Years; the literature-based Riverside Dickens Festival celebrating literature, characters, and community every February; and the Riverside International Film Festival in April.
The top employers are largely government and academic organizations: U.C. Riverside, renowned for its diversity, the Riverside and Alvord Unified School Districts, the Riverside Community College District, and the City and County of Riverside. Riverside's architecture also makes it an appealing choice for many Hollywood filmmakers. Most surprisingly, the navel orange tree that started it, the parent tree of all navel orange trees on the West Coast, can still be seen in Riverside.
