Ideally located between Los Angeles, San Diego, and Orange County, and sharing borders with one town, one reservation, and lots of lightly developed scenic land, Temecula is a moderately-sized city of 100,000 with an intriguing history and a promising future. Named for the Temecula people who inhabited the area, possibly for thousands of years, the name Temecula is interpreted variously as "the place of the sun" or "where the sun shines through the mist".The Mission of San Luis Rey de Francia was established here by the Spanish in 1798, and the land was granted by the Mexican government to Felix Valdez in 1844 as Rancho Temecula. After the Mexican-American War, the area was settled by Americans; the second post office in California was set up there in 1859. Temecula was a granite quarry, a shipyard for grain, and a cattle ranch before becoming incorporated in 1989.
Today, Temecula is known for its wine industry and vineyards, which were first established by the Mission in 1820. Some of the more renowned vineyards include Wilson Creek Winery, Callaway Vineyard and Winery (founded by Ely Callaway of Callaway Golf), and Thornton Winery, which produces champagne. Many wineries are open to the public and hold special events throughout the year.
Nine golf courses, a variety of activities available at Lake Skinner, and several festivals such as the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival, the Valley International Jazz Festival, and Children's Matsuri (Japanese festival) encourage the community to be out and about in the warm winters and hot, dry summers.
The economy is quite diversified with health care company Abbot Laboratories, Temecula Valley Unified School District, and Professional Hospital Supply as the top three employers.
