Villa Park (“The Hidden Jewel”) is a tiny, picturesque town located, due to unusual historical circumstances, right in the middle of the city of Orange. Settled by the Spanish in the late 1700s along with the rest of the Santa Ana Valley, it became part of the U.S. following the end of the Mexican-American war in 1848.American settlers used the land for a variety of orchards, mostly citrus groves, and when they began to feel threatened by Orange annexation advancing from the west, the families of the area incorporated Villa Park. Today, the land is almost fully developed, but because residential lots are a minimum of a half acre in size, the town still feels quite rustic and independent. There are only a handful of shops and public centers to serve the fewer than six thousand people who live here, and the City does extensive landscaping in these areas to help preserve the rural atmosphere. Since the city is so small, it’s able to offer personal services like residential vacation checks from the Sheriff’s Department.
The four public schools are part of the Orange Unified School District, and the school district is also the town’s largest employer. Most entertainment options are within a few minutes’ driving distance in the surrounding city of Orange, like the Orange County Zoo, The Block At Orange shopping and entertainment center, and the Anaheim Hills Golf Course. Only 20 minutes from Anaheim and 45 minutes from downtown Los Angeles, Villa Park has the convenience of a much larger suburban development with a charm all its own.
